Some careers demand precision. Others require presence. For Shubham Kothambikar, both have shaped his journey—first as an emergency medical technician responding to crises, and now as India’s representative at the ongoing Runway Model Universe 2025 in Manila, Philippines, which began on May 25 and runs until June 1.
Previously crowned Mr. Goa 2024 and Rubaru Mr. India Runway Model Universe 2025, he went on to earn a wildcard entry into the international competition—standing out among 26 contestants from across the country.
Before leaving for Manila, he received best wishes from Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who congratulated him personally.
“It’s a great experience to represent not just India, but the rich culture of Goa. I’ve always dreamt of holding the Indian flag high on a global platform. It is a dream come true,” says Kothambikar, who balances his modelling aspirations with his role as a frontline healthcare worker with the 108 ambulance service.
The ongoing competition in Manila features rounds such as culture wear, swimwear, a showcase of traditional attire, a closed-door interview, and a sustainable fashion challenge where participants are given 500 pesos to buy second-hand clothes and upcycle them into new outfits. The contestants also take part in a city tour and activities focused on sustainability.
“Being here is a challenge, but also an honour. The competition is tough, with contestants from 14 countries, but I’m giving it my all,” says Kothambikar, whose interest in modelling began during college. Participation in campus fashion shows helped him discover a passion for the field. He credits his success to the constant support of his family—especially his elder brother—close friends, and his mentors, including gym coach Govind Lotalikar, Rubaru director Pankaj Kharbanda and director of AB Production, Abrar Naik. “There were times when juggling work, training, and rest felt impossible. But I made up my mind—I had to make it happen,”
he says.
Kothambikar draws inspiration from model Milind Soman and hopes to one day walk for designer Christian Siriano. After the pageant, he plans to continue pursuing modelling and acting, and looks forward to collaborating with NGOs and brands to give back to the community.
