The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has issued a notice to the management of St Britto’s School, Dattawadi, following the collapse of a portion of the compound wall on Monday, directing them to remove the hanging grills and cut the trees, which are likely to fall, within 24 hours from the date of receipt of
the notice.
Additionally, Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar has directed the school management to immediately undertake repair work on the remaining compound wall, which is in a dangerous condition, to prevent any untoward incident. He warned that failure to comply would result in necessary action under the Goa Municipalities Act, 1968.
It may be recalled that the collapse of a portion of the compound wall damaged three scooters and a portion of a nearby house. The MMC had cleared the debris and installed barricades to prevent vehicular movement on the road, as the remaining wall poses a further risk
of collapse.
MMC officials conducted an inspection of the site, where they observed that the grills above the ground level were left hanging due to the wall collapse and could fall at any moment. Additionally, trees in the vicinity were also found to be dangerous as they could collapse and cause harm to life and property of the public using the adjacent road.
The notice was issued under provision 190 of the Goa Municipalities Act, 1968, directing the school management to remove the hanging grills, cut the dangerous trees, and carry out the repair work on the remaining portion of the compound wall.
