Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said that migrants are involved in most of the illegalities and crimes taking place in the state.

Responding to media queries on the sidelines of the launch of  six new fire tenders procured by the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services in the city, the Chief Minister said, “Everyone knows… If we analyse the rising incidents and why they are happening… there is maximum involvement of  migrants in the incidents such as thefts or illegalities.”

Stressing on the need for tenant verification, Sawant exhorted the people to go for the process through police stations, before renting out their houses and rooms.

Appealing to Goans, he said, “If someone comes to you asking for a room, first get the tenant verification done. Let the police do the verification because we don’t know the antecedents of those seeking to take the houses on rent. We expect cooperation from the people.”

The Chief Minister said the stringent National Security Act (NSA) has been invoked to instill fear among criminals, adding that “Goans need not fear NSA. It is for them who create public nuisance and harass people”.

The police will decide on who needs to be detained under the stringent law, Sawant said.

The police have been given full freedom to decide on detaining antisocial elements and  criminals under the Act, he said.

NSA has been invoked  for three months in view of a number of incidents, including gunfire cases  reported in Margao and Pernem.

“We have invoked the Act to maintain law and order in the state and public safety,” he said.
