PANAJI: The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) fielded 36 candidates in the zilla panchayat elections and won 10 seats. While the tally may not appear substantial, the party has made inroads in assembly constituencies represented by BJP and AAP. Its alliance partner, GFP, which contested nine seats, won one seat from the Raia ZP constituency, an area that also forms part of an assembly segment represented by BJP.

In North Goa, Congress won the Aldona and Sirsaim ZP seats. The Aldona assembly constituency is represented by Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira. Congratulating Sirsaim Congress candidate Nilesh Kambli, Ferreira said, “Kambli won a seat that is otherwise represented by BJP (Tivim) MLA and Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar. Two villages of Aldona constituency, Nachinola and Moira, fall in the Sirsaim ZP constituency.”

Ferreira said the victory carried added significance as it resulted in the BJP being unseated from the Aldona ZP seat.

In South Goa, Congress won ZP seats in Nuvem, Velim, Benaulim, Davorlim, Guirdolim, Curtorim, Navelim and Cola.

Among these, Nuvem, Davorlim and Navelim fall under assembly constituencies represented by BJP MLAs, while Velim and Benaulim are represented by AAP MLAs. Curtorim is represented by an Independent MLA.
