Pape Gueye’s extra-time strike scripts their 1-0 win over hosts Morroco in a chaotic final
Rabat: Senegal clinched their second Africa Cup of Nations title with a dramatic 1-0 victory over hosts Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday. Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal in the fourth minute of extra time after a chaotic final that saw fans storm the field and Senegal’s players temporarily walk off in protest of a controversial stoppage-time penalty.
The 69,500-capacity stadium witnessed 14 minutes of disruption after Senegal’s potential stoppage-time goal was disallowed for a foul, and Morocco were awarded a penalty. Brahim Diaz’s Panenka attempt was comfortably saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, keeping the score level. Senegal coach Pape Thiaw rallied his side back onto the pitch, where Gueye netted the winner.
The match was marred by fights among substitutes, tensions in the press box, and aggressive fan behavior. Morocco coach Walid Regragui termed the incident “shameful” for African football.
Senegal played without suspended captain Kalidou Koulibaly and midfielder Habib Diarra, and further injuries to Krepin Diatta and Ousseynou Niang before kickoff complicated their lineup.
“This victory is special; Sadio Mane inspired us to return and focus,” Gueye said.
Senegal, who previously won the 2021 edition via penalties against Egypt, made their fourth final appearance. Morocco, co-host of the 2030 World Cup, were denied their first title in 50 years.
