As part of efforts to expand long-term institutional support for persons with disabilities beyond classroom learning, the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) will introduce two new schemes — a fully funded Sheltered Workshop Scheme and an interest-free Infrastructure Loan Scheme aimed at strengthening training and facilities across the sector.
Director of DEPwD Varsha Naik said the Sheltered Workshop Scheme, which is in the pipeline, will benefit students aged 18 years and above. Schools and NGOs will be able to apply to set up full-day workshops where students can learn vocational activities.
“This scheme will help our students become more independent,” Naik said. “They will learn useful skills and stay engaged throughout the day. The department will give complete funding for the workshop, including materials and other support. Schools will need to create a separate setup
to run these workshops properly.”
Naik said the objective is to provide practical training and build confidence. “We want to give them opportunities to grow and prepare for a better future,” she said.
The Infrastructure Loan Scheme will be implemented in the next financial year after procedural formalities are completed. It will offer interest-free loans to NGOs and special schools to build or upgrade infrastructure. The loan amount will depend on student
enrolment.
To qualify, institutions must be registered with the department, have at least 15 enrolled students and possess a minimum of five years’ experience in the disability sector.
