The Margao traffic cell booked 20 cases of tinted glass violations in January this year as against 17 during the corresponding period last year.

A traffic official said a special drive is being carried out to crack down on violations, and several cases have been booked. Nearly an identical number of cases have also been booked in February, the official said.

Sources said that in 2025, 38 cases were booked following new directions from the government on enforcement. This year, regular drives are being conducted to curb the use of fancy tinted glasses.

In 2012, the Supreme Court issued guidelines banning the use of tinted glass and black films on cars following a public interest litigation filed by Avishek Goenka, who had raised concerns that such vehicles were being used in crimes, including sexual assault of women.

Under Section 100 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, the use of tinted glass attracts penalties. As per the Supreme Court guidelines, vehicles must maintain at least 70 per cent visibility in the front and rear and 35 to 50 per cent visibility on the sides. No exemptions have been granted to any category.
