Stating that there have been continuous arrests of young tourists allegedly involved in harassing foreign tourists along the beaches, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte on Tuesday said the government has sought additional women police personnel from the Tourist Police Unit (TPU).
Khaunte was responding to the issue raised by Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar during the Zero Hour mention.
Amonkar had raised concerns over the safety and dignity of women tourists visiting the state. “In recent times, there have been noticeable incidents wherein women tourists have reportedly faced harassment, particularly in beach areas and other popular tourist locations. Such incidents are deeply concerning and risk tarnishing the image of Goa as a safe, welcoming, and world-class tourism destination,” he said.
The Mormugao MLA said tourism is the backbone of Goa’s economy and the safety of every visitor, especially women, must remain a top priority. “This can create a perception of insecurity that may adversely affect the confidence of tourists and, in turn, the livelihood of thousands of Goans who depend on tourism,” said Amonkar.
Khaunte said the issue was very important. “Young tourists who think that Goa mei kuchbhi chaltahai, we are clear… kuchbhi nahi chalega and there will be action,” said Khaunte, adding that “a new trend has started wherein youth go to beaches and take selfies with foreign tourists and trouble them”.
Khaunte said that after discussions with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, police, the traffic police unit and personnel from the respective police stations were deployed and action is being taken.
“There have been continuous arrests of people… whoever is found indulging in irresponsible behaviour. We have requested more women police constables for safety and security,” said Khaunte.
