With the tourist season approaching, South Goa Superintendent of Police Tikam Verma convened a meeting with Drishti lifeguards to strengthen beach safety and improve coordination between police and lifeguards in assisting tourists and locals.
The meeting, held at the police headquarters in Margao, was attended by Sub-divisional Police Officer Sidhant Shirodkar and Police Inspectors of Colva, Canacona, Vasco and Mormugao.
Verma said plainclothes police staff will conduct random checks on beaches to curb narcotics and tourist harassment, while visible police presence will be ensured during sunset hours and night beach activities. Lifeguards have been asked to maintain round-the-clock vigilance, especially on weekends and holidays, and report incidents such as drowning, altercations or suspicious activity immediately to the local police station and control room.
Each police station will appoint a liaison officer to coordinate with lifeguard supervisors, and dedicated communication groups will be set up for real-time updates. Verma said lifeguards will also caution tourists against unsafe swimming.

He said that police inspectors have been instructed to carry out preventive patrolling in vulnerable areas and act swiftly on lifeguard inputs. Quarterly joint mock drills involving lifeguards, police and Fire and Emergency Services will also be conducted to improve disaster response. Lifeguards have been directed to keep first-aid kits ready and update police on the status of rescue equipment.
