In a disturbing incident that occurred in Bicholim, a 58-year-old man allegedly killed his 14-year-old son over unruly behaviour before committing suicide at their residence at Bordem, Bicholim on Tuesday. The man left a detailed 12-page suicide note, said police.
The deceased have been identified as Sanjay Mhapsekar and his son Sanchit Mhapsekar. They originally hailed from Pinguli in Maharashtra. Sanjay, a political functionary, was found lying on the floor, while his son Sanchit was found on a bed. Police initially registered a case of unnatural death.
Post-mortem examination conducted at the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim on Tuesday confirmed that Sanchit died due to strangulation, while Sanjay died of asphyxia after consuming a poisonous substance.
Based on the medical reports, suicide note and the circumstantial evidence, police concluded that Sanjay murdered his minor son and later died by
suicide.
According to the police, the incident came to light on Monday evening around 6:49 pm after the police control room in Panaji received a call from an unidentified person. A police team that rushed to the spot discovered two bodies lying inside the house.
During inspection of the scene, police recovered a suicide note written by the father wherein he mentioned about disputes with his son over studies and behaviour. Police said the suicide note also had a mention made by the father about his fear of the son’s unruly behaviour likely impacting the family’s future.
A forensic team, a dog squad and fingerprint experts examined the scene and collected the evidence.
Bicholim police have registered a case under relevant provisions of law, including charges related to murder and offences under Goa Children’s Act. The incident has left the local community in shock.
