The journey of Lt Col Narendra Divekar, SM (Retd.) is a study in versatility, courage and an unwavering pursuit of excellence. From the coastal town of Vasco to the extreme heights of the Siachen Glacier, his career spans some of India’s most demanding terrains and complex military roles. His story is not only a personal achievement but also a compelling call to the youth of Goa to look beyond the familiar and serve the nation.

Divekar began his academic journey at St Joseph’s High School in Vasco, followed by MES College, and later graduated from Parvatibai Chowgule College of Science and Arts (Autonomous). A turning point came during his Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications, which he chose to leave midway in order to join the Indian Military Academy. Between June 1988 and December 1989, he underwent rigorous training that transformed him from a civilian into a commissioned officer, laying the foundation for a distinguished career in the Indian Army.

Initially commissioned into the Artillery, Divekar quickly demonstrated strong operational capabilities. He went on to command a Bofors battery in strategically sensitive regions such as Ferozepur and Sevoke Road in the North East.

His career took a defining turn when he transitioned to Army Aviation. This shift placed him in some of the harshest environments in the world. His missions in Sikkim and the Siachen Glacier during Operation Meghdoot earned him his first Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card.

Over time, he developed expertise across several critical areas. He operated Mi-25 and Mi-35 attack helicopters in the challenging terrain of Jammu and Kashmir. He also played a pioneering role as the first Adjutant during the raising of the inaugural Advanced Light Helicopter Squadron in Bangalore. His service, marked by both technical skill and courage, was recognised with the Sena Medal and a second Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card.

Retirement from the Army did not mark the end of his professional journey. Divekar transitioned seamlessly into civilian aviation, continuing his work as a helicopter pilot. Today, he flies offshore missions to the Mumbai High oil fields and undertakes operations across the demanding terrains of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. His post service career reflects the adaptability, discipline and resilience shaped by his years in uniform.

A proud Goan, Divekar encourages the youth to consider a career in the armed forces. He describes the Indian Army as both honourable and fulfilling, offering opportunities to develop courage, discipline and a sense of purpose. He believes that Goa’s cultural heritage and resilience are valuable strengths that can contribute meaningfully to national service. Divekar’s life connects the calm landscapes of Goa with the demanding realities of defending the nation’s borders. His journey stands as a reminder that with determination and a strong sense of duty, it is possible to rise to extraordinary heights.
