Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said Goan filmmakers take significant risks to tell local stories, unlike larger film industries where projects are driven by commercial returns.
He was speaking at the premiere of the Konkani feature film ‘Umesh’ at Maquinez Palace. The film has been produced by Gurunath Atmaram Patade under the banner of Guru & Associates Productions and directed by Vardhan Vijaykumar Kamat.
Also present were former BCCI joint secretary Rohan Gauns Dessai, Rajiv Kala Mandir chairman Ritesh Naik and Entertainment Society of Goa vice chairperson Delilah Lobo.
Describing ‘Umesh’ as a uniquely Goan story, Sawant said such films help preserve and promote the Konkani language and connect Goans globally. He assured continued government support for
regional cinema.
“Unlike Bollywood or Hollywood, where returns are a key consideration, Goan producers invest despite uncertainties to ensure local stories are told,” he said, adding that initiatives by the Entertainment Society of Goa have encouraged Konkani and Marathi films.
Dessai said the digital era offers new opportunities for artists, noting that social media influencers are increasingly finding a platform in films. He stressed the importance of promoting Konkani, describing it as a language rooted in emotion and
cultural identity.
Naik said the film provided a platform for young talent and noted that portions were shot at PES College in Ponda. He said that the government has been supporting regional cinema.
Lobo extended her best wishes to the team and urged audiences to support Konkani films.
Director Kamat said filmmaking is challenging and credited the team’s efforts since October 2024 for bringing the project to completion. He also thanked the ESG and the government for their support.
