Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said that despite its liberation from the colonial Portuguese regime after 14 years of India’s Independence, Goa is one step ahead of other states in the country in overall development.

He also stated that life expectancy has been rising in Goa due to good health infrastructure, and that the state has become an educational hub owing to quality infrastructure.

The Chief Minister was addressing people after unfurling national flag at the state-level function held to mark the 64th Goa Liberation Day at the Goa University ground, Taleigao.

The historic occasion was observed by heartfelt tributes to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices paved the way for Goa’s liberation from the colonial rule.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister remembered the courage, resilience, and determination of those who stood against colonial oppression and played a crucial role in shaping Goa’s destiny.

He also made special mention of the brave men and women who participated in Operation Vijay, the decisive military action that led to Goa’s liberation on December 19, 1961.

The Liberation Day is not just a celebration, but a reminder of the responsibility to uphold the values of freedom, unity, and progress, he reckoned.

Sawant underlined the importance of passing down the stories of sacrifice and bravery to future generations so that the legacy of the freedom movement remains alive.

The Chief Minister appealed to citizens to keep the state clean and protect its rivers and fragile environment from pollution.

“We have set a target to make Goa a developed state by 2037, and I appeal to the people to contribute towards it,” he added.

The event was attended by government officials,  students, and other citizens, all united in paying homage to the heroes of the Goa freedom movement.

Cultural programmes and patriotic displays added to the solemn yet celebratory atmosphere, reflecting the spirit of a free and proud Goa.

The Chief Minister also honoured police, fire service personnel, home guards and traffic wardens with medals and appreciation certificates on the occasion.
