Damaged pipeline flowing waste into lake to be fixed: CCP
Panaji: In the suo motu Public Interest Litigation concerning dead fish found floating in Mala Lake, the Corporation of the City of Panaji
(CCP) on Wednesday informed the High Court of Bombay at Goa that multiple illegal sewage connections had been discovered during inspection in the surrounding area. The counsel for CCP stated that a report would be filed and served by Wednesday evening. The counsel further stated that seven houses had been identified and their outlets have been sealed.
The High Court vacation bench directed the house owners to make the necessary applications for sewage connections with the authority concerned to ensure proper waste management compliance going forward.
The court stated that if such applications are made, the authority shall process them expeditiously.
The High Court was further informed that the inspection also revealed a damaged sewage pipeline that was causing overflow of waste into the lake.
Authorities assured the court that the defect would be repaired within one week to prevent further contamination.
CCP was permitted to file the report before the registry and directed to communicate the present order to all house owners whose outlets had been sealed.
According to CCP’s submission, seven residential houses in the vicinity were found discharging sewage directly into the lake through unauthorised outlets. The corporation stated that these illegal connections had since been sealed as part of immediate corrective measures. The matter will next be heard on June 9 when the court is expected to review compliance and further progress in restoring the lake’s environmental condition.
