El Nino casts shadow over monsoon in India
Rain is one of nature’s greatest blessings, sustaining all living organisms and nurturing life on Earth. It is often regarded as nature’s magic—something beyond human control and beyond the reach of laws or regulations. While science has made remarkable advances in understanding weather patterns, nature continues to remind us of its immense power and unpredictability. One of the major climatic phenomena that influences India’s monsoon is El Nino. This climate pattern is caused by the abnormal warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. The warming weakens the trade winds and alters global weather systems, often affecting rainfall across many parts of the world. Studies have shown that El Nino can significantly disrupt India’s southwest monsoon. It tends to weaken the moisture-bearing winds that bring rainfall to the subcontinent, resulting in below-normal precipitation. In some years, it can also increase the likelihood of droughts and severe heatwaves, placing enormous pressure on agriculture, water resources and power supplies. As June 2026 draws to a close, many regions continue to await the full arrival of the monsoon. A prolonged delay in rainfall is a matter of concern, as a weak monsoon can reduce crop yields, contribute to food inflation and adversely affect rural livelihoods. At the same time, even during an overall dry season, changing atmospheric conditions can trigger localized flash floods and extreme rainfall events. Meteorological agencies, including the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and international organisations, are closely monitoring weather developments and the possible influence of El Nino on the monsoon. While forecasts provide valuable guidance, weather and climate remain complex systems that cannot be predicted with absolute certainty. India is uniquely positioned, receiving moisture from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. This geographical advantage has often helped sustain the country’s rainfall patterns despite climatic challenges. Therefore, while the monsoon may be delayed, it need not be denied. Nature has its own rhythm, and history has shown that patience and hope often accompany the waiting for rain.

Justice finally prevails
In a judgement that brings closure to one of the most painful legal battles faced by the Church in recent years, the Ranchi Civil Court has acquitted a Missionaries of Charity nun and two others in the much-publicised 2018 child trafficking case, declaring them not guilty after nearly eight years of legal proceedings. The case centred on allegations that a 14 day-old infant had been sold for Rs 50,000 from a Missionaries of Charity-run home in Ranchi. The accusations led to the arrest of Missionaries of Charity nun Sr Concilia and triggered intense scrutiny of the congregation’s institutions across Jharkhand. Sr Concilia spent three years in prison before obtaining bail. Following Sr Concilia’s arrest, many institutions run by the congregation had faced investigations and harassment as police had widely publicised the above allegations in Jharkhand. The Ranchi Civil Court’s judgment is a significant setback for those who sought to tarnish the reputation of the congregation through unsubstantiated allegations. It serves as a reminder that attempts to malign institutions for political or communal gains ultimately fail when subjected to judicial scrutiny. Those responsible for spreading such claims should reflect on the consequences of their actions. The verdict reaffirms that truth and justice has prevailed, bringing vindication to the congregation and its members.

Enduring father’s love
There is a unique kind of love that often speaks softly yet stands unwavering through every storm—a father’s love. Father’s Day offers a meaningful opportunity to honour the men who guide us with wisdom, protect us with courage, and support us through countless sacrifices.
A father may not always communicate his feelings through eloquent words, but his actions reveal the depth of his love. He rises early to provide for his family, quietly carries the weight of responsibilities, and takes pride in the achievements of his children. From teaching us our first lessons in confidence and perseverance to helping us navigate life’s most difficult decisions, fathers shape our character in ways we often fully appreciate only with time and maturity. The Holy Bible beautifully captures the essence of a father’s love in Psalm 103:13: “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.” This verse reminds us that a father’s care, compassion, and devotion reflect, in many ways, the boundless love that God has for His children. While some may view Father’s Day as a commercial occasion, its true significance extends far beyond gifts and celebrations. It is a time to strengthen family bonds, express heartfelt appreciation, and acknowledge the love, guidance, and sacrifices that fathers provide throughout their lives.
