The Sanguem-Quepem Dalit Sanghatana (SQDS) and Dalit Voice of Goa intensified their demand for political representation on Friday, urging the state government to reserve an Assembly constituency
for the Scheduled Caste (SC) community in the Kushavati district.
Members of the two organisations staged a dharna at Quepem and later
submitted memorandums outlining their demands to the Quepem Mamlatdar and the Deputy Collector
of Quepem.
The delegation was led by SQDS president Deepak Morajkar and included Sudhakar Morajkar, Kishna Naga Morajkar, Anand Kadalker, Santosh Sangekar, Rajaram Sangekar and several other community members.
Deepak Morajkar said the SC community in the region has consistently been deprived of its rightful reservation quota and the benefits of various government welfare schemes.
He said that North Goa already has reserved Assembly constituencies
and Zilla Panchayat seats for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community and argued
that a similar model should be implemented for the
SC community in the Kushavati district.
Morajkar said reserving an Assembly constituency for the SC community would ensure fair political representation and promote social equity in the new district.
