Unidentified burglars attempted to commit theft in seven different villas in a gated complex in Porvorim, which is manned by private security personnel, in the early hours of Saturday.
Raising concerns over the safety of residents, most of whom are senior citizens residing in the locality, residents said that this was the fourth such incident in the span of one year.
Porvorim MLA and Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, who reached the site after being informed, said he would seek continuous police patrolling in the area. He also stressed the need to check whether the private security deployed is working efficiently.
Following a complaint lodged by Sunil Tandon, chairperson of Highland Villas Co-operative Housing Maintenance Society Ltd, Porvorim police registered an FIR against unidentified accused persons.
Police said that on Saturday, between 12.30 am and 3.45 am, the accused trespassed by entering the compound of the gated society. They broke open windows, gained entry into seven villas and attempted to commit theft. The accused also damaged CCTV cameras installed at different villas.
“The accused entered the area through the thick vegetation near the villas. The modus operandi seems to be a well-studied approach,” said Khaunte. “In addition, it is important to keep a check on the security personnel to see whether they are doing their job properly or whether they need to be changed.”
“I will speak to the CM as well as the DGP. Monitoring needs to be increased. The DySP has to take responsibility with his team to ensure that the areas are mapped and continuous patrolling is carried out,” said Khaunte.
Residents said that the accused were chased away by a resident in the last villa. “Despite having security in the complex, this is the fourth such incident in less than a year,” a resident said.
