Goa University has approved a one-time relaxation under Ordinances OC-81 and OC-82 for students enrolled in the LLB, BA LLB and BCom LLB programmes under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), allowing eligible students with up to five backlogs to progress to the third year.
The decision was taken at the Academic Council meeting held on July 1 to consider requests for relaxation of the progression provisions under the ordinances.
“Accordingly, the revised eligibility for admission to the third year as per OC-81.6.3 and OC-82.6.3 shall be read as follows: Only those candidates who have fulfilled the requirements of Semesters I to IV examinations, and have not more than five courses as backlog for Semesters I to IV taken together, shall be considered eligible for admission to the third year,” states the circular.
The circular further states that no such relaxation will be granted to students of the BA LLB and BCom LLB programmes under Ordinance OC-82 for progression to the fourth or fifth year.
Meanwhile, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Goa stated that the persistent efforts of its general secretary, Kumar Arjun Gauli, had resulted in major relief for law students.
“Following NSUI Goa’s gherao of the Vice Chancellor’s office and continuous representation of students’ concerns, the University has allowed eligible students with up to five backlogs to progress to the third year and granted provisional admission to students awaiting results,” an NSUI Goa press note stated.
It added, “This decision ensures that hundreds of students will not lose an academic year and marks a significant victory for student welfare through collective action.”
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Girish Chodankar congratulated the party’s student wing and stated that NSUI Goa’s persistent struggle had secured major relief for
law students.
