Agencies: Indian Air Force Football Team registered their first win of the 135th Durand Cup, defeating Sri Lankan side Defenders FC 2-1 in a Group C encounter at the Birsa Munda Stadium on Wednesday.
Somananda Singh broke the deadlock in the 25th minute to give the Airmen a deserved lead before they doubled their advantage in the 68th minute when Defenders FC defender K.D.S. Sankalpa diverted Mohammad Aquib’s cross into his own net while attempting a clearance.
Defenders FC responded immediately as N.M. Aflal reduced the deficit two minutes later, but the Airmen remained resolute at the back to seal all three points.
The victory took Indian Air Force level on points with Jamshedpur FC in Group C, although the latter stayed top of the standings on superior goal difference.
