Devotees of Shri Swami Samarth, along with members of the Shri Swami Samarth Parivar Math and a Hindu group, on Thursday lodged four complaints with Anjuna police seeking registration of an FIR against seven social media users for allegedly posting derogatory comments about the revered saint and hurting the religious sentiments of devotees.

A large number of devotees and members of the math committee gathered at Anjuna police station and submitted the complaints over allegedly offensive comments posted on social media, including on a  Facebook page, in connection with posts about the recently installed statue of Shri Swami Samarth at Siolim.

The complainants alleged that while several social media users had expressed devotion, some individuals posted abusive, mocking and insulting remarks about Shri Swami Samarth, who is worshipped by devotees across the country.

The complaints have named seven Facebook users and alleged that their comments ridiculed the saint.

Screenshots of the alleged comments have also been submitted to the police as evidence.

The complainants have sought registration of an FIR, preservation of electronic and digital evidence, verification of the identities of the social media users through Facebook and other digital means, and a detailed investigation.

They have also sought strict legal action against those found responsible and urged the police to take preventive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Anjuna police are conducting an inquiry into the complaints.
