Disclosing that the AI-powered traffic system is expected to cover the entire Goa by January 2027, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho on Tuesday said the AI-enabled traffic cameras activated across an initial set of key junctions in the state are still in the trial phase.
“However, the traffic violations have dropped to a few hundreds, indicating better compliance,” he added, pointing out, “The aim of the government is to ensure traffic discipline, and not impose fines.”
Interacting with mediapersons, Godinho said that such cameras have been rolled out at 26 locations, with plans to expand them at another 29 locations so that AI-based surveillance would cover all areas of Goa by January 2027.
The AI cameras have caught nearly 2,500 traffic violations in Goa in just nine days, with helmetless riding, triple riding and mobile phone use among the offences detected.
“Motorists are also queuing up at pollution under control centres as also for obtaining third-party insurance,” he informed.
The Transport Minister warned that those removing number plates or driving without proper registration will be caught, as enforcement agencies are intensifying monitoring of traffic violations.
He said that such vehicles will be taken into custody.
Godinho appealed to motorists to follow traffic rules, stressing that the government wants compliance and not enforcement of penalties.
