Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday directed the police to deal with an “iron hand” with anyone who “messes with the men in uniform”, saying attacks on police personnel would not be tolerated.
Sawant said Goa Police personnel are patient and kind, but that should not be taken for granted.
Speaking on the sidelines of a programme at the police headquarters in the city, the Chief Minister said, “If someone is charging on them, it will not be tolerated. The police will not keep quiet. I have given them full power.”
The police’s duty is to protect people, he said, adding that anyone who charges at police personnel should be shown “what policing is”.
Sawant’s statement comes on the heels of a confrontation between a police official and office-bearers of a political party in Sanguem. The police official was accused of assaulting a lawyer during the scuffle.
An FIR has been filed by the Sanguem Police against the office-bearers of the party.
