Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said most road accidents involving two-wheeler riders occur due to the use of mobile phones and failure to follow traffic rules.
Referring to an accident at Amona bridge on Friday morning, Sawant said, “I feel 90 per cent of the accidents occur due to the use of mobile phones… in one hand mobile phone while the other hand is on the accelerator. The rider is in a hurry to reach the destination faster and subsequently the speed of the two-wheeler increases.”
Speaking during a programme at the police headquarters in the city, the Chief Minister said he was travelling towards Panaji when the accident occurred and that three other vehicles were ahead of his vehicle.
“Fortunately, there were no vehicles coming in the opposite direction. The injured girl was shifted in our car to the public health centre,” he said.
Sawant urged motorists not to overspeed or use mobile phones while driving.
“There are traffic signals and speed-breakers… all need to follow all the traffic rules,” he said.
Referring to AI cameras and police deployment, the Chief Minister said the measures were being implemented for public safety and not to harass people.
“People safety is more important to us,” he said, adding that accidents occur when traffic rules are not followed.
