Mapusa: The protest by students of Pernem Government Higher Secondary School over the transfer of four of the school’s teachers continued for the second day on Friday. Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar, who intervened in the matter, told the students that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has assured that the four teachers working on a lecture basis would rejoin the school from Saturday.
Students have been demanding the reinstatement of the four teachers who had been terminated and replaced by staff promoted from the secondary level.
The students had alleged that the change in teaching staff in the middle of the academic year had disrupted continuity in their education.
Arlekar met the Director of Education and the teachers concerned on Friday and discussed the issue and the ongoing protest. Sawant was also informed about the matter.
Arlekar said the Chief Minister had taken cognisance of the issue and assured that all four teachers would be allowed to rejoin the school.Students had said
the teachers had taught them during the first four months of the current academic term and had served at the school for periods ranging from five to 15 years and, in some cases, up to 20 years. They said
the teachers unders-tood each student’s academic capacity, individual learning difficulties and progress.
