Communicare Trust together with Clube Harmonia de Margao will bring a group of professionals in unconventional fields together for a conversation.
The initiative titled ‘Beyond The Box: The Stories of Those Who Took the Road Less Travelled’, will be held on September 10, 6 p.m.
“From a civil engineer who became an internationally recognised musician, to professionals who moved into conservation, sustainable business, architecture, performing arts and farming, each panelist represents a different interpretation of what it means to travel the road less taken,” says film maker and founder, Communicare Trust, Nalini Elvino e Sousa.
Among the panelists is Portugal’s acclaimed contemporary guitarist Marta Pereira da Costa. Originally trained as a civil engineer, she eventually left her profession to pursue music full-time. Her work takes the Portuguese guitar beyond traditional fado, bringing it into conversation with jazz, world music and other musical traditions. While Costa will not be physically present, a recorded interview will offer audiences an opportunity to hear about her journey.
The other panelists include Cecille Rodrigues, a dancer, choreographer and the co-founder and creative director of Encore Academy of Performing Arts; Gabriella D’Cruz who is a marine conservationist and founder of a seaweed food company, Good Ocean; Nandini Velho, a field biologist, communicator and educator; Jonah Fernandes, the founder of Zeroposro, a Goa-based initiative promoting local produce, sustainable consumption and a reduction in waste; Tallulah D’Silva, an architect, educator, environmentalist and advocate for sustainable and vernacular building practices; and Kenneth Lopes, Stanley Fernandes and Neville Lewis, the trio behind Goencho Xetkar, an initiative working to revive and modernise farming in Goa.
Sousa hopes that the event will help assist young minds to re-discover their innate curiosity and find a passion for new career paths. “Oftentimes, youngsters are encouraged to stick to the status quo of being lawyers, doctors, engineers etc, but people thrive when they are given the freedom to practice what is meaningful to them,” she says.
The conversation, she adds, will explore not just their achievements, but the decisions, risks, doubts and turning points that led them towards lives and careers outside the conventional script.
