In today’s fast-growing world of technology, electronic devices play a vital role in every field, from communication and healthcare to manufacturing and entertainment. Behind the smooth functioning of these devices are skilled professionals known as electronics mechanics who build, test, repair and maintain this equipment.

An electronics mechanic is a trained technician who works with electronic circuits, components and systems. Their role includes assembling, installing and troubleshooting devices such as power supplies, control panels, circuit boards, and communication systems. They require a strong understanding of basic electronic and electrical concepts, including resistors, capacitors, transistors, and integrated circuits. Skills in soldering, reading circuit diagrams, and using testing equipment like multimeters and oscilloscopes are also essential.

Problem-solving ability and attention to detail are key qualities for this trade. Training is provided through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) under the Electronics Mechanic Trade, which offers hands-on experience in PCB assembly, testing, repair and troubleshooting, along with theoretical knowledge.

This is a two-year course conducted by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) under the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS). Candidates who have passed Class 10 with mathematics and science or an equivalent qualification, are eligible to enrol.  After completing the course, trainees receive a National Trade Certificate from the Directorate General of Training (DGT), which is recognised in India and abroad. Graduates have opportunities for further education, including completing Class 12 after the course and a one-year apprenticeship or gaining direct admission to the second year of a Polytechnic programme.

Career options in this field are wide-ranging. Electronics mechanics can work in electronics and computer-based companies, take up roles in government departments such as wireless operators or meter readers, work as freelancers or start their own enterprises.
