J.P. PEREIRA

Prince Jacob presents a tragic tale of petty family squabbles that turn vengeful.

Simonia is married to Victor. The latter is hot tempered and is always worried about his income. The elder son, Sunny, is in a charity boarding school and the daughter Edna, is looked after by a relative. Victor’s mother has more sense and is fond of the family, trying to bring some peace. When Simonia gets pregnant again, Victor tries to abort the baby with some tablets. This results in a premature child and the mother dies during childbirth. Years later, Victor turns successful in a business he had begun and is still hot headed when it comes to dealings. Johny the premature baby, is differently abled and the father hates him, blaming him for the death of his wife. Edna, the daughter marries, meets with an accident and is deserted by her husband as she cannot bear a child. Sunny doesn’t like Johny and is married to Beatrice, a woman with her own ideas. The grandmother tries to keep the family together. One day, her son Lazarus who had left home when young, returns. Watch what happens later, as evil perpetrates and people realise family values at a very great cost.

The good script presents many issues to think about like misuse of medicines and its outcome, and blaming the innocent who have to bear the brunt. It also highlights the grandparents love. The tiatr has a good band, interesting songs, lots of good clean humour and some well executed trick scenes which make the show worth watching. Tony provides light effects to beautiful sets by Kapil Chari and the stage is managed by Eddy with Joshua. Valency is superb, both as Simonia, the wife who suffers and later as Edna the loving daughter. She has a fine dress sense too. Candida is perfect as the elderly grandmother, putting in plenty of emotion in her act while Celeste is Beatrice, plotting and conniving. Vicky is Victor, the cruel and demanding father who later turns penitent. Jacinto does a fine role of the soft spoken but jealous and evil Lazarus. Maverick is convincing as the differently-abled Johny while Baptist plays Sunny, the jealous sibling. Anson does a cameo and Avers is the doctor. Evola is the maid, Jacob is the mechanic, and Kenny, the driver. The three create plenty of enjoyable humour throughout.

Seby Moraes (trumpet) leads the band that has Mariano (saxophone), Menjes (drums), Seby (keyboard), and Mackon (bass). Celeste renders the opening song with some Biblical scenes depicted in between. There are more songs from Valency, Evola, Maverick, Baptist, Kenny and Jacob. A solo from Avers Pereira, another by Anson, a duo paying tribute to the first female actors on the Konkani stage by Candida and Valency and a humorous trio from Evola-Kenny-Jacob with ‘change’ in colours, need special mention. Watch the show.
