Celebrating a film icon

The Shyam Benegal Film Festival will be held at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, from May 30 to June 1, showcasing three movies directed by the celebrated filmmaker.

Benegal, a film director, screenwriter and documentary filmmaker, who is often regarded as the pioneer of parallel cinema, passed away in December, last year, few days after celebrating his 90th birthday.

The three-day film festival in memory of him is organised by Ravindra Bhavan Margao Film Club and will be inaugurated by the renowned writer Damodar Mauzo. Mauzo has also contributed to Goan film industry by writing screenplay and dialogues of Konkani films like ‘Aleesha’, ‘Sood’, ‘Shitu, ‘O Maria’ and the recent film, ‘Claudia’ which is under production.

The inauguration will be held on May 30, 6 p. m, followed by the screening of the film, ‘Trikaal’ set in Goa during the twilight of Portuguese rule.

‘Sardari Begum’ will be screened on May 31 in the presence of music director Ashok Patki and classical vocalist Arati Ankalikar Tikekar, who sang all the songs in this film. Patki had composed all the thumris in the film. The screening will be followed by a question-answer session with the artistes.

Finally, on June 1, ‘Mammo’ will be screened in the presence of renowned actor Rajit Kapur who is the lead actor in the film. There will be question-answer session with Kapur after the film.
