Pernem: Nilesh Dessai (46), arrested in connection with the recent acid attack on a 17-year-old youth in

Dhargalim, has been remanded in two days of police custody by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Pernem.

Police said Dessai had stolen the acid used in the attack from the company in Karaswada where he had been employed as a gardener for just over a week. On Friday, he allegedly stole a five-litre can of acid, which he concealed in his scooter under a raincoat.

Police investigations revealed that the victim was in a relationship with Dessai’s minor daughter. Both were students at a higher secondary school in Mapusa. The girl allegedly passed away after their relationship ended.

Dessai was sent to Goa Medical College and Hospital for medical examination to check for acid traces on his body. Police have seized his scooter, helmet, and raincoats, all believed to have been used in the crime. Forensic tests are being conducted to detect chemical traces on the vehicle.

The accused will be produced before the Children’s Court in Panaji on Thursday for further remand.
