Old Goa police have arrested a 28-year-old doctor, Vrushab Doshi, on charges of rape and sexual abuse of a patient admitted at a leading private hospital in Old Goa. The victim, a Moroccan national, had been admitted on August 29, and the incident occurred on August 31 in the hospital’s ICU, police said.

According to police, the accused was absconding but was tracked down and arrested from Solapur, Sangli on September 11.

Following the incident and subsequent complaint, the hospital issued a statement on Friday said that the alleged perpetrator, Dr Doshi, was suspended. The hospital said the victim continues to undergo treatment and that it will provide all moral and logistical support during her ordeal.

Police said an FIR was registered on September 10 under sections 64(2) (e)(j), 74, 75, 76, and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, based on a complaint by the victim’s sister. Referring to the complaint, police said that on August 31 at around 10 pm, while the woman was admitted at the hospital, the accused outraged her modesty and committed rape while she was immobile and in a vulnerable condition. Police said the accused was on the run after the incident but was eventually located in Solapur, his native area.
