Over 1.4 lakh labourers registered under schemes

Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday announced a series of worker-centric welfare measures aimed at strengthening social security and empowering the labour force in Goa.

Making the announcements during the celebration of International Labour Day at the Lok Bhavan, Dona Paula, Sawant said the government is committed to improving the quality of life of workers and their families through targeted interventions.

“The newly launched initiatives include a digital literacy programme to equip workers with essential technological skills, medical assistance for their elderly parents, and financial support for children pursuing competitive examination coaching,” he said.

Additionally, the government will provide the reimbursement of tuition fees for higher education, ensuring greater access to academic opportunities for workers’ families.

Workers will also be covered under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, offering financial protection in case of accidental death or disability.

“Efforts will continue to strengthen workers across social security, education, and healthcare sectors. The implementation of these schemes will begin soon, and necessary instructions have been issued to the departments concerned. The decision is seen as an important step towards the state’s social development,” he said.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to the principle of Antyodaya, the Chief Minister emphasised that welfare measures must reach every worker, particularly those at the grassroots level.

He noted that over 1.4 lakh workers are currently registered under various welfare schemes and urged more workers to come forward and enrol.

Highlighting the importance of labour in Goa’s growth story, Sawant said workers are the backbone of the state’s progress and will remain central to achieving the vision of Viksit Goa 2037.

In a gesture of recognition, 20 workers were felicitated with the Shram Gaurav Shramik Mitra Award for their dedication and contribution to the state’s development.

The function was organised by the Department of Labour and Employment, which was attended by Minister for Labour and Employment Atanasio Monserrate and other dignitaries.
