Panaji: Rohit Monserrate was on Monday re-elected as Mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), extending his tenure for a historic sixth term, while Vasant Agshikar was elected unopposed as Deputy Mayor for the second time.

Speaking to media, Monserrate thanked the councillors for their continued support and said his focus will remain on strengthening the civic infrastructure and ensuring minimal inconvenience to residents of the city.

The Mayor said that he has made it clear that the CCP is not in favour of digging up the newly tarred roads for the work of laying Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network in Panaji. “The roads have been completed after considerable effort and expenditure. Any move to dig them up again will inconvenience citizens and undo the work done,” he said, adding that public comfort remains the top priority for CCP.

Stating that development must be planned in a manner that does not compromise the existing infrastructure, Monserrate said that if PNG implementation leads to disruption in daily life, the CCP will oppose such works.

With no other nominations filed for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Commissioner of CCP Clen Madeira declared that Monserrate and Agshikar were elected unopposed, respectively, on Monday during a special meeting held. Agshikar, meanwhile, assured full cooperation to the Mayor in addressing the civic challenges and ensuring smooth functioning of the CCP.

Monserrate is expected to continue in office until the run-up to the Goa legislative assembly election 2027 when he is likely to contest.
