Panaji: National highway development in Goa has gathered steam  with projects worth Rs 12,504.79 crore covering 264.16 km in five years from 2020-21 to 2024-25, a reply tabled in the Rajya Sabha revealed.

The reply came  to a question by Goa Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanawade, who  had sought details of all national highway and major road infrastructure projects sanctioned, underway or completed by the ministry in Goa during last five years.

The response  tabled by  Union Minister of Roads, Transport and Highway Nitin Gadkari said that 73 projects worth crores of rupees were sanctioned for NH works in Goa – in the year 2020-21 Rs 152.25 crore, in 2021-22 Rs 4,270.64 crore, in 2022-23 Rs 1000.75 crore, in 2023-24 Rs 2,289.67 crore and in 2024-25 Rs 4,745.5 crore.

As per data, a total of 21 projects are currently in different stages of execution across key corridors such as NH-66, NH-748 and NH-566, indicating a mix of expansion, safety and mobility-related interventions.

At present, 11 projects are under implementation, largely focusing on safety improvements and urban traffic decongestion. Key ongoing works include  MES College–Bogmalo flyover, Dhargal flyover, construction of vehicular underpasses at Peddem and Naibag, and a foot overbridge at Bambolim.

In addition, black spot rectification works at Balli and Cuncolim, slope protection measures on landslide-prone stretches of NH-66, and construction of a toll plaza are also underway.

The data further shows that seven major projects are yet to start, and these account for a substantial share of the overall investment. Notable among them are the four-laning of Ponda–Bhoma and Boma–Old Goa stretches on NH-748, the Navelim–Cuncolim stretch on NH-66, and Benordem to Pollem corridor, all scheduled for completion by 2028.

Another key project—linking the end of Zuari approaches to the Margao bypass—also remains pending.

It is to be noted that NH-66 continues to dominate highway development in Goa, reflecting its role as the state’s primary arterial route.
