Panaji: A new state-of-the-art primary health centre, coming up in Porvorim, will be developed as a centre of excellence, said Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Thursday.

The new facility will be constructed at a cost of over Rs 19 crore and is likely to be completed within the next 6-7 months, Rane said.

“The new health centre will be developed as a centre of excellence. We have made all the required provisions. We will lay stress on preventive medicine,” Rane said, adding that there are plans to start satellite outpatient departments (OPDs) of the Goa Medical College and Hospital at the new facility.

Rane was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the new primary health centre (PHC) at Porvorim.

The total built-up area of the upcoming 32-bedded ground-plus-four floor facility is 4,226 square metres and it will house facilities like a casualty, OPDs, wards for males, females and paediatrics, laboratories, dialysis ward, physiotherapy ward among others.

Chairman of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) Michael Lobo said that the new PHC at Porvorim will be constructed within the next 6-7 months and handed over to the government.

“This PHC will be the first to get physiotherapy facility. Provision has been made to ensure that all the upgraded facilities like those in community health centres and district hospitals are provided. We will try to get it inaugurated before the code of conduct for the state assembly election,” said Lobo.

Porvorim MLA and Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said that the project has been tuned in a manner to help Porvorim residents. “Once it is completed, there will be a 24×7 pharmacy, consulting doctors visiting the facility, continuous rounds of physiotherapy, OPDs, etc. This PHC will cater to all the three panchayats of Porvorim – Penha de Franca, Salvador-do-Mundo and Soccorro,” he said.
