One of the two Olive Ridley turtles that was recently  rescued from ghost nets off Benaulim coast  was recently released back into the sea after receiving treatment. The second turtle, which sustained deep injuries to one of its fins, is still under medical care.

The Office of the Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife and Eco-Tourism), South Goa, commended fisherman Pele Fernandes for his timely intervention in rescuing the endangered turtles.

“Being the local fisherman, your swift action and dedication to marine life conservation reflect a deep commitment towards protecting our fragile ecosystem. The Olive Ridley turtles are a vulnerable species and your courageous intervention not only saved two precious lives but also contributed significantly towards ongoing conservation efforts,”deputy conservator Ankit Kumar stated in a letter of appreciation.

“Your compassion and sense of responsibility is inspiring. We commend your action and encourage other fishermen to follow your example in preserving and protecting our marine wildlife,” Kumar added.

Fernandes was on a dolphin-sighting trip with tourists when he noticed a clump of ghost nets with two turtles trapped in it. He successfully freed the turtles and informed forest officials and other authorities of the rescue.
