Panaji: A four-vehicle accident on the Bambolim flyover caused a major traffic jam on Sunday afternoon after a SUV bearing Karnataka registration reportedly hit the divider, turned around, and crashed into three other vehicles. The crash caused one of the cars to flip upside down and land on top of another SUV.
The image of the overturned car resting precariously on a white SUV went viral on social media.
As per sources, two people suffered minor injuries, including the driver of the car that turned turtle. They were taken to the casualty of the Goa Medical College department for treatment.
Eyewitnesses at the spot alleged that the SUV was being driven at high speed and was weaving through traffic before hitting the divider. By evening the road was cleared.
Eyewitnesses said the Karnataka registration SUV first hit the divider before crashing into three other vehicles.
“The Karnataka SUV was coming at high speed from the Margao side. It was weaving through traffic before it hit the divider and then the other cars,” an eyewitness said.
A local resident said similar accidents had occurred at the junction in the past.
“This is not the first accident at this junction. There have been serious accidents here earlier too. There should be speed cameras, proper traffic signals and stricter traffic control,” the resident said.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Karnataka registration SUV said, “A vehicle suddenly came from the front and cut in front of me. Because of that, my vehicle turned around completely.”
He further said, “There were no liquor bottles inside the car. I was alone in the vehicle. I had come from Gokak, Karnataka.”
Agaçaim police are investigating the accident and further information is awaited.
