Gunshots fired at duo; five arrested

Margao: A brutal attack by a gang of at least 20 people left two persons injured in the wee hours of Tuesday at Mungul in Margao. The police have arrested five accused in connection with the assault which saw firearm shooting.

The injured were rushed to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.

The Fatorda police said the violent attack took place around 2.45 am when five masked men intercepted two youths – Rafique Tanash (24) and Yukesh Tanash (20) – when both were travelling to Margao in a car.

Armed with deadly weapons including swords, sticks and gun, the five men attacked the duo at Mungul.

Gunshots were also fired towards Rafique Tanash and Yukesh Tanash.  At least two rounds were fired.

However, bullets missed the target but shattered the windscreen of the car and also hit its door, said the police, who later recovered a live bullet from the scene.

The assailants attacked the duo with a koita and soda bottles, leaving them in a pool of blood before making good their escape, the police said.

The accused, who arrived in five cars, have been identified as Akshay Talwar, Rahul Talwar, both from Borda, Wilson Carvalho, and Shahrukh from Davorlim, and Rasool from Margao, the police said, adding that 15 other unidentified people were believed to be part of the gang involved in the brutal attack.

Speaking to reporters, South Goa superintendent of police Tikam Singh Verma said the five accused were identified by the injured.

He said that 15 unknown people believed to be part of the conspiracy have also been booked.

The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the BNS and the Arms Act against the accused.
