Minister for Drinking Water Subhash Phal Dessai told the House that replacement of old and aged water pipelines is a continuous process, with work currently underway on 217.08 km of pipelines. He said the remaining old pipelines are targeted to be replaced over the next three to seven years.
In a written reply to a question tabled by Leader
of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Tuesday in the Goa Legislative Assembly, the minister said pilot studies at three locations were undertaken between 2011 and 2013 as part of the capacity development project for non-revenue water reduction in Goa.
He said the studies were conducted to assess the extent of non-revenue water, which includes physical losses such as leakages, theft and overflow of reservoirs, and to understand the various causes.
The minister said no major cases of water theft have been reported or identified, apart from occasional cases involving the use of domestic water for construction or commercial purposes.
According to the minister, provisions exist under water tariff notifications and rules to levy penalties and change the category from domestic to commercial or construction use after issuing a proper show-cause notice and conducting an inquiry.
