Despite efforts by the state government to boost local vegetable cultivation, Goa continues to depend heavily on vegetables imported from neighbouring states.

Data tabled in the Assembly shows that large quantities of vegetables are brought into the state, mainly from Karnataka and Maharashtra. Information provided by the Goa State Horticulture Corporation Ltd shows that during the financial year 2023–24, Goa imported 61,947 metric tonnes of vegetables. In 2024–25, imports stood at 58,042 metric tonnes. Further, between April 1, 2025 and December 22, 2025, vegetable imports were recorded at 16,187 metric tonnes.

In contrast, total vegetable production in Goa during 2023 was 5,585 tonnes from an area of 3,104 hectares. In 2024, production rose to 74,112 tonnes from 36,768 hectares. In 2025, vegetable production stood at 32,747 tonnes.

Vegetables grown in the state include bitter gourd, lady’s finger, bottle gourd, brinjal, chilli, cluster bean, coriander, cucumber, pumpkin, radish, red amaranthus, ridge gourd, sweet corn, string beans, spinach, fenugreek leaves (methi), dill (shepu), snake gourd, turnip, muskmelon and French beans, among others.
