Margao: South Goa is set to get three floating jetties as part of the government’s proposal to upgrade existing coastal jetties with modern floating infrastructure under the Sagarmala programme to boost coastal tourism and nautical activities.

Floating jetties have been proposed at Rassaim, Durbhat and Shiroda in South Goa.

In the newly carved Kushavati district, one is proposed at Sanvordem.

“Under the Sagarmala programme, around seven jetties have been proposed, of which three are in South Goa while one is in Kushavati district. The cost is Rs 73 crore,” Captain of Ports Octavio Rodrigues told ‘The Navhind Times.’

He said the jetties would be built with contributions from the state and central governments and would replace old Portuguese-era jetties, many of which are in dilapidated condition. “They have crumbled down, so we are trying to restore them,” he said.

The new floating jetties, he said, would boost the local economy and tourism. “Their main purpose would be to improve local connectivity and support tourism-related activities such as boating, while also accommodating fishermen,” said Rodrigues.

He ruled out the use of the jetties for cargo transportation. Referring to concerns that they could be used for coal transport, Rodrigues said the question did not arise as space was limited and large barges or coal-loaded vessels could not be handled there.

“Supporting infrastructure would also not be available as these are in village locations with poor road access. However, tourism could flourish once the jetties are developed,” said Rodrigues. Replying to a question on whether there was a similar proposal for River Sal, Rodrigues said there was none at present, though it could be considered in future.
