Nearly a year after the launch of an underground power cabling project in Sattari taluka, around 70 km of the proposed 100 km network has been completed, with the remaining 30 km expected to be laid before the monsoon.

The project covers 12 village panchayat areas and the jurisdiction of the
Valpoi municipality and aims to ensure uninterrupted power supply, particularly during the monsoon when overhead lines are frequently damaged by strong winds and falling trees.

Road excavations in parts of Valpoi municipal area have, however, led to inconvenience for pedestrians and motorists. “This exercise of digging a series of pits has not only narrowed the roads but also created a dusty and unsafe environment,” a local motorist said.

Electricity Department officials described the disruption as unavoidable and said restoration of affected roads would be taken up on priority after the cabling work is completed.

The project was inaugurated at Bhironda Panchayat Hall in the presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Power Minister Ramakrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane and Poriem MLA Deviya Rane.

Officials said earlier delays have been resolved and expressed confidence of completing the entire network as scheduled.
