Pernem: A joint inspection by authorities following the fire incident at Arambol beach, in which six shacks were gutted, has revealed multiple safety violations, including the absence of fire extinguishers and lack of proper licences. Officials also found that the road leading to the beach is blocked due to encroachments, preventing emergency vehicles from accessing the site in case of an emergency.

The inspection was carried out by Deputy Collector Shivprasad Naik, Mamlatdar Ranjeet Salgaonkar, panchayat members, and electricity department officials.

“The situation could have turned serious like the Birch fire incident, but fortunately, no one was injured,” said Naik, alleging that unplanned and unsafe construction, both temporary and permanent, was taking place in the area with the support of the local panchayat. He alleged that the panchayat has failed to take action where it was needed.

“The panchayat should not issue licences or allow construction without proper permission. Many beachside shacks attached to permanent structures are being sublet and used carelessly,” said Naik.

He also questioned whether these businesses had obtained fire safety clearance (NOC). “If not, FIR should be registered against them for threatening the life of the people,” said Naik, adding that compensation will only be given if the businesses were operating legally.

Officials also noted that access roads are so severely encroached upon that even a scooter cannot pass. The Deputy Collector has instructed authorities to identify and remove these encroachments immediately.
