Many ailing and bedridden senior citizens, along with others facing mobility challenges, have expressed a strong desire to exercise their right to vote in the December 20 zilla panchayat election.

However, due to the absence of provisions in the Goa Panchayat Raj Act and other technical issues, the State Election Commission is unable to facilitate home voting for such individuals.

Sources said there are over 800 senior citizens and persons with disabilities in South Goa district who are bedridden due
to illness. In contrast, a total of 2,263 senior citizens aged 85 years and above in South Goa were able to participate in the electoral process through home voting arrangements during the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

“We are being overlooked. Our constitutional right to vote is being denied. Despite my wish, I am unable to cast my ballot as I am confined to my bed, and there are no provisions in place for me to do so,” said a senior citizen.

Lawmakers must amend this situation before they too reach an age where they may face similar challenges,” said a senior citizen.
