Mapusa

The Mapusa JMFC Court on Wednesday sent former Arpora–Nagoa sarpanch Roshan Redkar to 14 days’ judicial custody in connection with the Birch by Romeo Lane fire tragedy.

Replying briefly to a media query, Redkar said, “God is great… I believe in God,” and did not respond to further questions while entering the police vehicle outside the Mapusa court.

Redkar was produced before the court after the expiry of 13 days of police custody and was remanded in judicial custody.

The December 6 fire at Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora claimed 25 lives. In connection with the case, Anjuna police have registered an offence and have so far arrested nine persons, including owners, the Luthra brothers and co-owner Ajay Gupta.

The Mapusa court had earlier rejected an application on December 30, paving the way for Anjuna police to proceed with the arrest. The accused later approached the High Court, but received no relief, following which Redkar surrendered before Mapusa JMFC.

The Directorate of Panchayats had disqualified Redkar and barred him from contesting panchayat elections for five years.
