In a major push towards protecting Goa’s riverine ecosystems, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted approval to a proposal to declare 5.60 crore square metres of land along the banks of the Mandovi river and the Zuari river as a no development zone (NDZ).
The proposal was submitted by the state Forest Department following directions from Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane, who had called for safeguarding eco-sensitive areas from unregulated development.
With the Centre’s nod, extensive stretches along the two rivers will now fall under strict regulatory protection, restricting construction and commercial activity.
Officials said the move is aimed at preventing encroachments, conserving biodiversity and maintaining the ecological balance of the riverbanks.
The Mandovi and the Zuari are among state’s most important natural resources, supporting livelihoods through fisheries, agriculture and tourism. However, rapid urbanisation and increasing developmental pressure have raised concerns over environmental degradation and loss of natural habitats along these waterways.
According to the department, the NDZ status would help preserve natural floodplains, improve water quality and ensure long-term ecological sustainability.
It is also expected to act as a buffer against flooding and erosion.
The move will help in protecting riverbanks is critical for maintaining Goa’s environmental health. However, effective enforcement of NDZ norms will be key to achieving the intended outcomes.
The Forest Department is expected to soon issue detailed guidelines for implementation, including monitoring mechanisms and restrictions applicable within the notified zone.
