Chirag Naik, a Madgaonkar and Congress member, ended his two-day fast on Saturday, which he had undertaken to oppose the proposed two-storey structure at the Margao municipal garden. He urged the citizens to unite and demand that the project be scrapped.

The Margao Municipal Council had earlier proposed setting up a restaurant in the garden, with a resolution adopted under the chairmanship of Damodar Shirodkar two years ago.

The government subsequently moved ahead with the plan, with the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation initiating work on a two-storey structure.

Several residents, including Chirag Naik, Prabhav Naik, Andrew Sequeira, Savio Coutinho and Vishal Pai Kokode and others, opposed the project. They rejected Shirodkar’s claim that the proposal was based on an error by GSIDC and that only renovation of the existing ground-level structure, estimated at Rs 3.96 crore, was planned.

Naik said he undertook the fast as a protest against the proposal, which he said would harm the garden’s natural. He said he ended the fast following requests from citizens, including Francisco Colaco and Uday Bhembre, but would continue opposing the project until it is withdrawn.
