Urges teachers to focus on guiding students towards self-employability

Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday said teachers must go beyond academics and actively guide students towards employment and self-reliance.
Sawant, who also holds the Education portfolio, said rising unemployment among graduates reflects a gap in the current approach to education.
Stating that earning degrees is no longer sufficient in today’s evolving job market, Sawant said, “I feel it is a mistake of teachers when I see students with double graduation, but still unemployed.” He urged educators to think “out of the box” and focus on making students self-employed by encouraging innovation, skill development and entrepreneurship.
Earlier, Sawant inaugurated the newly constructed Ahilya Girls Hostel at Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Khandola, in the presence of local MLA Govind Gaude.
Speaking about the importance of continuous counselling, Sawant suggested teachers’ stay connected with students even after graduation to guide them in career decisions.
Addressing concerns over the impact of Artificial Intelligence on jobs, he said, “While AI may replace certain roles, the role of teachers will remain vital in shaping and mentoring students for the future.” He further suggested institutions should maintain reports tracking the employment status of their graduates to help assess the effectiveness of education and identify areas for improvement.
The new girls’ hostel marks a milestone in strengthening the college’s infrastructure and promoting access to higher education for female students.
