Bicholim: Warning government department staff that strict action would be taken against those not performing their duty, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said there is a need for government employees from various departments who visit the panchayats to engage with the public.

Stating that the government has a duty to take the Union government and state government schemes to the people, Sawant asked sarpanchas and panchas to question and report, if required, government staff members who fail to perform their duty during their visits to the village panchayats.

The Chief Minister was addressing Karapur villagers after inaugurating the Karapur-Sarvan panchayat building. Expressing concern over negligence shown towards treatment of garbage, he warned the panchayat that such irresponsible attitude would not be tolerated. Sawant said panchayats should prepare a master plan for development of villages.

He said there is a need for all panch members to work with responsibility for welfare of the people. He said the villagers of Karapur should make use of water from Anjunem dam for farming.

Those present at the function included Mayem MLA Premendra Shet, Zilla Panchayat member Mahesh Sawant, Karapur-Sarvan panchayat sarpanch Tanvi Sawant, deputy sarpanch Divya Naik, Aparnadevi Rane and others.

Aparnadevi Rane, who donated her land for the panchayat building, was felicitated at the hands of the Chief Minister.

Shet said development works worth around Rs 27 crore are under way in his constituency under an infrastructure development scheme. He said a sports complex will be undertaken at Karapur on 12,000 square metres of land donated by Aparnadevi Rane.
