Mapusa: In the case where seven balls of ganja weighing 1.39kg were found thrown over the walls of the Colvale jail, police have recovered a SIM card from the cell where inmate Manthan Chari was lodged.

Sources said that while the mobile phone used by Chari was allegedly disposed of, police managed to recover the SIM card.

It may be recalled that on June 27, Colvale police arrested inmate Chari after three accused — Gautam Talwar, Samuel Pujari, and Jafar Mulla — named him during interrogation.

Investigation revealed that Chari was allegedly involved in drug trafficking and had contacted the accused over the phone, instructing them to supply drugs to the jail.

The incident came to light on June 14 when prison staff found seven balls containing a dried greenish leafy and flowery substance with fruiting tops, suspected to be ganja, weighing 1.397 kg, worth Rs 1.4 lakh.

With the help of CCTV footage from the jail premises and surrounding areas, along with technical support, police traced and arrested the accused, who were subsequently remanded to five days’ police custody.
