Panaji: Police authorities have registered a 28 per cent drop in fatal road accidents in the first two months this year compared to the corresponding period last year.
Director General of Police (DGP) Alok Kumar attributed this achievement to the police who have been focussing on quality prosecution, which has had a direct bearing on reducing road accidents.
Kumar said that the traffic police as well as the district counterparts have been putting in additional efforts to penalise violators.
“Since last year, the focus was on drunken driving, riding without a helmet and overspeeding, or any other violations due to which accidents can occur. This
has resulted in a decline of 14 fatal accidents since January compared to last year,” said Kumar.
He said that 50 fatal accidents were registered last year for the first two months. “Our aim is to reduce the number of fatal accidents by focusing on traffic violations,” he said.
Regarding the recent road rage incident in North Goa, he said, “As far as the incident goes, it depends on a case to case basis…I will always appeal to people not to take law into their hands,” said Kumar.
He said that if any road user is involved in an accident, they are supposed to take the victim to the hospital and report themselves to the police station.
A day ago, traffic police had said that no cash payments will be accepted while compounding challans with effect from March 1.
Reacting to a query regarding an option for cash payment if a violator has no digital payment mode, Kumar said that in today’s age, everyone operates at least one method to make online payments.
“They will be given a gateway and through that they will be able to make the payment,” said Kumar.
